This groundbreaking textbook on intonation was written in 1962 and is in its 4th revision. This latest edition (11th printing) is printed and published with permission of the author. Mr. Leuba's book offers the student, amateur and professional a detailed study of the "Science" of Intonation. The standard method of teaching intonation by the intuitive method is discussed and shown to be flawed. This book first addresses the physical and acoustic phenomena relating to the problems of Intonation and Tuning and then makes suggestions concerning the use of "mechanical aids" in training the musician's perception, and some practical applications.
The contributions of Philip Farkas in the fields of symphonic horn playing, pedagogy, and instrument design are of such importance that he will certainly be considered a major figure of the twentieth century. As a horn player, he was the only person ever to be offered the solo horn position in each of the "big five" American orchestras (Boston Symphony Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Cleveland Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra). His first book, The Art of French Horn Playing (Summy-Birchard Music, 1956) is considered the "bible" of horn players and is still a best seller in its field. For thirty nine years, Marcel Tabuteau was the legendary oboist of the Philadelphia Orchestra. A faculty member at the Curtis Institute, he taucght a class on phrasing that all wind players were required to take for one year. Arnold Jacobs took his class for three years and considered Tabuteau as one of his most influential teachers. Much of his musicianship came from Tabuteau.
Laila Storch is a world-renowned oboist in her own right, but her new book honors Marcel Tabuteau, one of the greatest figures in 20th-century music. Tabuteau studied the oboe from an early age at the Paris Conservatoire and was brought to the United States in 1905, by Walter Damrosch, to play with the New York Symphony Orchestra. Kristian Steenstrup was no stranger to the Jacobs studio. During the early 1990's he would lead groups from Denmark to the Northwestern University Masterclasses. He followed this with lessons from Mr. Jacobs, who had great respect for Kristian. His trips to Chicago continued after the passing of Mr. Jacobs as he continued studies with Vince Cichowicz and John Henes, both Jacobs students. He spent time at WindSong Press continuing research with Mr. Jacobs' book collection archives which he indexed. Years later, Kristian transcribed those masterclasses and continued research with some of the sources that Mr. Jacobs used and new research conducted by Kritian and others. While the title of Teaching Brass does not contain Mr. Jacobs' name, most material comes from Kristian learned from Mr.Jacobs - the third book about Arnold Jacobs - with a trumpet player's perspective!. . .
