If you practice the Rochut melodious etudes for trombone you will know the value of being able to perform with a smooth lyrical musical line. The Brahms Ten Studies were originally written for Horn or Trumpet and were first published soon after his death in 1897. Unfortunately there is not much written about the origins of the Studies. There are questions as to whether they are original or ?manufactured? by an enterprising musician. In my opinion, a few of the studies, especially the slower ones have the ?stamp? of the Master on them. Mr. Cherry believes that the Studies are authentic. It is fairly certain that Brahms?s father did play some horn and there is a good chance that Johannes performed in a horn club as well. The Studies were all originally written in the key of ?C? treble clef. Mr. Cherry has taken the liberty to transpose many of them into different keys for musical variety and technique. This is a common practice for many Trumpet and Horn study books. He has also added some breathe marks and alternate slide positions. Many thanks to friend & colleague, Ralph Sauer, who helped with the editing of these studies. These studies are all in bass clef and appropriate for performers of intermediate level and higher.
Bridge, Frank - Four Pieces for Trombone and Piano
British composer Frank Bridge is mainly remembered for his beautiful chamber music. The Four Pieces from 1912 are originally for Violin and Piano and are titled:

There is a wonderful simplicity to Bridge's music, a simplicity that was lost forever just two years later at the beginning of the "Great War", WW I. Bridge's most famous composition student was Benjamin Britten, who wrote one of his greatest works as an homage to Bridge.

A short but beautiful solo for Trombone and Piano transcribed by Seattle Symphony Trumpeter, Geoffrey Bergler. This haunting melody will sound in your ears for days. Victor Ewald is primarily known for his beautiful brass quintet works. The Romance, Opus 2 is originally for Cello or Viola, but lends itself perfectly for Trombone also. The work of about 3 minutes is in A-B-A form and has a light delightful lilt to it. The Romance is written in tenor clef and is for moderately advanced performers, a great piece for a recital.
Faure's haunting & serious Elegie, originally written for Cello has been transcribed for Trombone & Piano by Val Strobel. This work is for a moderately advanced Trombonist in bass & tenor clef. The piano part needs a player with good technique. Range is from a low C below the staff to a high C and is about 4 minutes in length. This work can be performed on a Tenor or Bass Trombone (with a good high C). This excellent transcription will make a fine addition to any recital program.
Fauré's two beautiful & elegant sounding works, Berceuse Op. 16 and Sicilienne Op. 78 have been transcribed for Trombone & Piano by Ralph Sauer. Both are originally written for Violin or Cello, but easily transfer their charm to the Trombone. They are both set in bass clef and can be performed by intermediate level players. Either are perfect additions for any recital.
The Skye Boat Song, among the most popular of all Scottish folk tunes, deals with the flight of Bonnie Prince Charlie (Charles Edward Stewart) from Scotland to the Isle of Skye in 1746, after having been defeated on Culloden Moor by the English Army of King George II. The present setting, for either Tenor or Bass Trombone and Piano, is mostly lyrical and passes through a series of episodes that evoke watery images in various ways. A stormy episode which superimposes a more martial tune (relying heavily on the familiar ?scotch snap? rhythm) against a variation of the original folk tune leads to brief quotations from Mendelssohn?s Hebrides overture (the Isle of Skye is part of the group of islands known as the Hebrides) before a short recapitulation of the theme.
